TOI-500 c
Astrophysical Synthesis & Habitability Characterization
TOI-500 c is a confirmed sub-neptune exoplanet orbiting the star TOI-500, located approximately 154.6 light-years (47.39 parsecs) from the Solar System. First announced in 2022 by La Silla Observatory using the Radial Velocity detection technique (measuring periodic Doppler reflex motion in the host star's spectrum), this world measures 2.09 Earth radii and has a measured mass of 5.03 Earth masses. Combining its mass and radius yields a mean bulk density of 3.04 g/cm³ (an intermediate density indicative of a deep water-ice mantle or dense volatile envelope), a surface gravity of 1.15 g⊕ (11.28 m/s²), and an escape velocity of 17.4 km/s.
In its orbital architecture around TOI-500, TOI-500 c completes one full revolution every 6.636 Earth days. Its moderate orbital eccentricity of e = 0.072 driving measurable seasonal insolation cycles.
ℹ️ Thermal & Atmospheric Regime: Current photometric and spectroscopic constraints for TOI-500 c place it outside the conservative habitable zone definition pending further atmospheric characterization.
The host star TOI-500 is classified as an orange K-type star of spectral type K6 V with an effective photospheric temperature of 4,440 K, a radius of 0.678 R☉, a mass of 0.74 M☉, an estimated bolometric luminosity of 0.16 L☉. Stellar evolution modeling indicates an estimated stellar age of 5 Gyr and a metallicity of [Fe/H] = 0.12 dex (metal-rich relative to the Sun). From Earth, TOI-500 shines at apparent V-band magnitude 10.54 (faint and requiring research-grade or CCD telescopic photometry) in the Southern celestial hemisphere. The TOI-500 system is a multi-planet architecture hosting 4 confirmed worlds, with TOI-500 c sharing its stellar neighborhood alongside TOI-500 b, TOI-500 d, TOI-500 e.
Methodology: Computed using the Schulze-Makuch et al. (2011) weighted metric comparing physical interior (radius, estimated density) and surface thermal regime (escape velocity, equilibrium temperature).
