Astrophysical Synthesis & Habitability Characterization

PSR J2322-2650 b is a confirmed gas giant exoplanet orbiting the star PSR J2322-2650, located approximately 750.2 light-years (230 parsecs) from the Solar System. First announced in 2017 by Parkes Observatory using the Pulsar Timing detection technique, this world measures 13.9 Earth radii (1.24 Jupiter radii) and has a measured mass of 252.643 Earth masses (0.79 Jupiter masses). Combining its mass and radius yields a mean bulk density of 0.52 g/cm³ (a low bulk density dominated by an extended hydrogen-helium gaseous envelope), a surface gravity of 1.31 g⊕ (12.85 m/s²), and an escape velocity of 47.7 km/s.

In its orbital architecture around PSR J2322-2650, PSR J2322-2650 b completes one full revolution every 0.323 Earth days at a semi-major axis of 0.0102 AU (an ultra-close orbit less than one-seventh of Mercury's 0.387 AU distance from the Sun, where strong stellar tidal forces typically induce synchronous rotation). Its mean orbital velocity is approximately 343.6 km/s (compared to Earth's 29.8 km/s). With a near-circular eccentricity of e = 0.0017 (ranging from 0.0102 AU at periapsis to 0.0102 AU at apoapsis), the planet experiences minimal orbital distance variation.

☁️ Atmospheric Regime (Volatile / Gas Envelope): With a radius of 13.900 R⊕, PSR J2322-2650 b exceeds the empirical ~1.8–2.2 R⊕ Fulton radius valley threshold, indicating a substantial hydrogen-helium or supercritical volatile envelope without a conventional solid terrestrial surface.

The host star PSR J2322-2650 is classified as a stellar host with a mass of 1.4 M☉.

Earth Similarity Index (ESI): 0.29 Earth Baseline = 1.00

Methodology: Computed using the Schulze-Makuch et al. (2011) weighted metric comparing physical interior (radius, estimated density) and surface thermal regime (escape velocity, equilibrium temperature).
