Astrophysical Synthesis & Habitability Characterization

NGC 2682 YBP 401 b is a confirmed gas giant exoplanet orbiting the star NGC 2682 YBP 401, located approximately 2709.8 light-years (830.82 parsecs) from the Solar System. First announced in 2016 by La Silla Observatory using the Radial Velocity detection technique (measuring periodic Doppler reflex motion in the host star's spectrum), this world measures 14.3 Earth radii (1.28 Jupiter radii) and has a measured mass of 146.202 Earth masses (0.46 Jupiter masses). Combining its mass and radius yields a mean bulk density of 0.28 g/cm³ (a low bulk density dominated by an extended hydrogen-helium gaseous envelope), a surface gravity of 0.71 g⊕ (6.96 m/s²), and an escape velocity of 35.8 km/s.

In its orbital architecture around NGC 2682 YBP 401, NGC 2682 YBP 401 b completes one full revolution every 4.087 Earth days. Its moderate orbital eccentricity of e = 0.15 driving measurable seasonal insolation cycles.

☁️ Atmospheric Regime (Volatile / Gas Envelope): With a radius of 14.300 R⊕, NGC 2682 YBP 401 b exceeds the empirical ~1.8–2.2 R⊕ Fulton radius valley threshold, indicating a substantial hydrogen-helium or supercritical volatile envelope without a conventional solid terrestrial surface.

The host star NGC 2682 YBP 401 is classified as a warm F-type star of spectral type F9 V with an effective photospheric temperature of 6,165 K, a radius of 1.2158 R☉, a mass of 1.14 M☉, an estimated bolometric luminosity of 1.916 L☉. Stellar evolution modeling indicates a metallicity of [Fe/H] = -0.046 dex (near-solar heavy-element abundance). From Earth, NGC 2682 YBP 401 shines at apparent V-band magnitude 13.699 (faint and requiring research-grade or CCD telescopic photometry) in the Northern celestial hemisphere.

Methodology: Computed using the Schulze-Makuch et al. (2011) weighted metric comparing physical interior (radius, estimated density) and surface thermal regime (escape velocity, equilibrium temperature).
