Kepler-286 e
Astrophysical Synthesis & Habitability Characterization
Kepler-286 e is a confirmed super-earth exoplanet orbiting the star Kepler-286, located approximately 4001.4 light-years (1226.85 parsecs) from the Solar System. First announced in 2014 by Kepler using the Transit detection technique (producing an estimated primary transit depth of 0.0354% across the stellar disk), this world measures 1.77 Earth radii and has a measured mass of 3.78 Earth masses. Combining its mass and radius yields a mean bulk density of 3.76 g/cm³ (an intermediate density indicative of a deep water-ice mantle or dense volatile envelope), a surface gravity of 1.21 g⊕ (11.87 m/s²), and an escape velocity of 16.3 km/s.
In its orbital architecture around Kepler-286, Kepler-286 e completes one full revolution every 29.221 Earth days at a semi-major axis of 0.176 AU (orbiting interior to Mercury's 0.387 AU benchmark in the Solar System). Its mean orbital velocity is approximately 65.5 km/s (compared to Earth's 29.8 km/s). The orbit is modeled as circular (e = 0.00), maintaining a constant stellar distance throughout its year.
⚠️ Thermal Regime (Irradiated / Hot Zone): At an equilibrium temperature of 539 K (+266°C / +511°F) and receiving 20.60 S⊕ (~28,037 W/m²), Kepler-286 e orbits interior to the runaway greenhouse boundary where surface liquid water cannot persist.
The host star Kepler-286 is classified as a stellar host with an effective photospheric temperature of 5,580 K, a radius of 0.863 R☉, a mass of 0.83 M☉, an estimated bolometric luminosity of 0.648 L☉. Stellar evolution modeling indicates an estimated stellar age of 2.75 Gyr and a metallicity of [Fe/H] = -0.25 dex (metal-poor relative to the Sun). From Earth, Kepler-286 shines at apparent V-band magnitude 15.863 (faint and requiring research-grade or CCD telescopic photometry) in the Northern celestial hemisphere. The Kepler-286 system is a multi-planet architecture hosting 4 confirmed worlds, with Kepler-286 e sharing its stellar neighborhood alongside Kepler-286 b, Kepler-286 c, Kepler-286 d.
Methodology: Computed using the Schulze-Makuch et al. (2011) weighted metric comparing physical interior (radius, estimated density) and surface thermal regime (escape velocity, equilibrium temperature).
