HIP 39017 b
Astrophysical Synthesis & Habitability Characterization
HIP 39017 b is a confirmed gas giant exoplanet orbiting the star HIP 39017, located approximately 216.3 light-years (66.32 parsecs) from the Solar System. First announced in 2024 by Multiple Observatories using the Imaging detection technique (resolved directly via high-contrast coronagraphic or interferometric imaging), this world measures 12 Earth radii (1.07 Jupiter radii) and has a measured mass of 7500.75 Earth masses (23.6 Jupiter masses). Combining its mass and radius yields a mean bulk density of 23.93 g/cm³ (an iron-enriched, high-compression rocky core), a surface gravity of 52.09 g⊕ (510.83 m/s²), and an escape velocity of 279.7 km/s.
In its orbital architecture around HIP 39017, HIP 39017 b completes one full revolution every 31000 Earth days (84.87Julian years) at a semi-major axis of 22.1 AU (a wide outer-system orbit beyond Jupiter's 5.20 AU distance in our Solar System). Its mean orbital velocity is approximately 7.8 km/s (compared to Earth's 29.8 km/s). The planet follows a highly eccentric trajectory (e = 0.55, swinging from 9.945 AU at periapsis out to 34.255 AU at apoapsis), pointing to past dynamical scattering or secular gravitational perturbations.
❄️ Thermal Regime (Cryogenic Zone): With an equilibrium temperature of 91 K (-182°C / -296°F) and an incident flux of 0.01 S⊕ (~16 W/m²), surface water and volatile species on HIP 39017 b would remain locked in cryogenic ice phases unless warmed by subsurface tidal or radiogenic heating.
The host star HIP 39017 is classified as a luminous A-type star of spectral type A9/F0 with an effective photospheric temperature of 7,201 K, a radius of 1.5199 R☉, a mass of 1.52 M☉, an estimated bolometric luminosity of 5.573 L☉. Stellar evolution modeling indicates an estimated stellar age of 0.115 Gyr and a metallicity of [Fe/H] = -0.26 dex (metal-poor relative to the Sun). From Earth, HIP 39017 shines at apparent V-band magnitude 6.961 (accessible to binoculars and small amateur telescopes) in the Southern celestial hemisphere.
Methodology: Computed using the Schulze-Makuch et al. (2011) weighted metric comparing physical interior (radius, estimated density) and surface thermal regime (escape velocity, equilibrium temperature).
