HD 206893 c
Astrophysical Synthesis & Habitability Characterization
HD 206893 c is a confirmed gas giant exoplanet orbiting the star HD 206893, located approximately 132.9 light-years (40.76 parsecs) from the Solar System. First announced in 2022 by European Southern Observatory using the Imaging detection technique (resolved directly via high-contrast coronagraphic or interferometric imaging), this world measures 16.365 Earth radii (1.46 Jupiter radii) and has a measured mass of 3527.895 Earth masses (11.1 Jupiter masses). Combining its mass and radius yields a mean bulk density of 4.44 g/cm³ (a terrestrial silicate-iron composition comparable to Earth (5.51 g/cm³)), a surface gravity of 13.17 g⊕ (129.15 m/s²), and an escape velocity of 164.2 km/s.
In its orbital architecture around HD 206893, HD 206893 c completes one full revolution every 2290 Earth days (6.27Julian years) at a semi-major axis of 3.74 AU (corresponding to the middle-system regime between Mars at 1.52 AU and Jupiter at 5.20 AU). Its mean orbital velocity is approximately 17.8 km/s (compared to Earth's 29.8 km/s). The planet follows a highly eccentric trajectory (e = 0.283, swinging from 2.6816 AU at periapsis out to 4.7984 AU at apoapsis), pointing to past dynamical scattering or secular gravitational perturbations.
⚠️ Thermal Regime (Irradiated / Hot Zone): At an equilibrium temperature of 1182 K (+909°C / +1668°F) and receiving 0.20 S⊕ (~278 W/m²), HD 206893 c orbits interior to the runaway greenhouse boundary where surface liquid water cannot persist.
The host star HD 206893 is classified as a warm F-type star of spectral type F5 V with an effective photospheric temperature of 6,500 K, a radius of 1.3112 R☉, a mass of 1.31 M☉, an estimated bolometric luminosity of 2.753 L☉. Stellar evolution modeling indicates an estimated stellar age of 0.155 Gyr. From Earth, HD 206893 shines at apparent V-band magnitude 6.688 (accessible to binoculars and small amateur telescopes) in the Southern celestial hemisphere. The HD 206893 system is a multi-planet architecture hosting 2 confirmed worlds, with HD 206893 c sharing its stellar neighborhood alongside HD 206893 b.
Methodology: Computed using the Schulze-Makuch et al. (2011) weighted metric comparing physical interior (radius, estimated density) and surface thermal regime (escape velocity, equilibrium temperature).
