CoRoT-24 b
Astrophysical Synthesis & Habitability Characterization
CoRoT-24 b is a confirmed sub-neptune exoplanet orbiting the star CoRoT-24, located approximately 1929.4 light-years (591.56 parsecs) from the Solar System. First announced in 2014 by CoRoT using the Transit detection technique (producing an estimated primary transit depth of 0.1556% across the stellar disk), this world measures 3.7 Earth radii (0.33 Jupiter radii) and has a measured mass of 5.7 Earth masses. Combining its mass and radius yields a mean bulk density of 0.62 g/cm³ (a low bulk density dominated by an extended hydrogen-helium gaseous envelope), a surface gravity of 0.42 g⊕ (4.12 m/s²), and an escape velocity of 13.9 km/s.
In its orbital architecture around CoRoT-24, CoRoT-24 b completes one full revolution every 5.113 Earth days at a semi-major axis of 0.056 AU (orbiting interior to Mercury's 0.387 AU benchmark in the Solar System). Its mean orbital velocity is approximately 119.1 km/s (compared to Earth's 29.8 km/s). The orbit is modeled as circular (e = 0.00), maintaining a constant stellar distance throughout its year.
⚠️ Thermal Regime (Irradiated / Hot Zone): At an equilibrium temperature of 1070 K (+797°C / +1467°F) and receiving 79.83 S⊕ (~108,643 W/m²), CoRoT-24 b orbits interior to the runaway greenhouse boundary where surface liquid water cannot persist.
The host star CoRoT-24 is classified as an orange K-type star of spectral type K1 V with an effective photospheric temperature of 4,950 K, a radius of 0.86 R☉, a mass of 0.91 M☉, an estimated bolometric luminosity of 0.398 L☉. Stellar evolution modeling indicates an estimated stellar age of 11 Gyr and a metallicity of [Fe/H] = 0.3 dex (metal-rich relative to the Sun). From Earth, CoRoT-24 shines at apparent V-band magnitude 15.383 (faint and requiring research-grade or CCD telescopic photometry) in the Southern celestial hemisphere. The CoRoT-24 system is a multi-planet architecture hosting 2 confirmed worlds, with CoRoT-24 b sharing its stellar neighborhood alongside CoRoT-24 c.
Methodology: Computed using the Schulze-Makuch et al. (2011) weighted metric comparing physical interior (radius, estimated density) and surface thermal regime (escape velocity, equilibrium temperature).
