BD-08 2823 b
Astrophysical Synthesis & Habitability Characterization
BD-08 2823 b is a confirmed gas giant exoplanet orbiting the star BD-08 2823, located approximately 134.8 light-years (41.33 parsecs) from the Solar System. First announced in 2009 by La Silla Observatory using the Radial Velocity detection technique (measuring periodic Doppler reflex motion in the host star's spectrum), this world has a minimum or true mass of 2948.494 Earth masses (9.28 M♃), while its physical transit radius has not yet been geometrically observed.
In its orbital architecture around BD-08 2823, BD-08 2823 b completes one full revolution every 5.6 Earth days at a semi-major axis of 0.06 AU (orbiting interior to Mercury's 0.387 AU benchmark in the Solar System). Its mean orbital velocity is approximately 116.6 km/s (compared to Earth's 29.8 km/s). Its moderate orbital eccentricity of e = 0.15 carries the world between 0.051 AU at periapsis and 0.069 AU at apoapsis, driving measurable seasonal insolation cycles.
⚠️ Thermal Regime (Irradiated / Hot Zone): At an equilibrium temperature of 799 K (+526°C / +979°F) and receiving 65.72 S⊕ (~89,452 W/m²), BD-08 2823 b orbits interior to the runaway greenhouse boundary where surface liquid water cannot persist.
The host star BD-08 2823 is classified as an orange K-type star of spectral type K3 V with an effective photospheric temperature of 4,816 K, a radius of 0.71 R☉, a mass of 0.5 M☉, an estimated bolometric luminosity of 0.243 L☉. Stellar evolution modeling indicates an estimated stellar age of 4.5 Gyr and a metallicity of [Fe/H] = -0.06 dex (near-solar heavy-element abundance). From Earth, BD-08 2823 shines at apparent V-band magnitude 9.86 (accessible to binoculars and small amateur telescopes) in the Southern celestial hemisphere. The BD-08 2823 system is a multi-planet architecture hosting 2 confirmed worlds, with BD-08 2823 b sharing its stellar neighborhood alongside BD-08 2823 c.
